Learned a trick from an Australian friend of mine. When out in the field during late afternoon, you can determine sunset by holding your hand out at a comfortable arm's length with your fingers cutting across your field of view. Hold your fingers between the sun and the horizon. The number of fingers between the sun and horizon will give a good estimate of how much sunshine before sunset. Fifteen minutes a finger. Example: 3 fingers x 15 minutes = 45 minutes of sunlight. Great for evening photography.
