View Full Version : Abandoned places in Arizona

I am planning another trip to Arizona, mainly to explore ghost towns and abandoned places. Several months ago, I found a website that told about various abandoned places in AZ.

One of them was an old abandoned amusement park that never got off the ground......some guy started building it and never finished, I think it may have been in Yuma County.

The other was something like a Christmas or North Pole Village or Christmas Store, and I think it was in the northwest part of Arizona. It was right on a main road, I believe. It may have been in a town with a Christmasy sounding name.

Does anybody have any information about either of these places?

There is a town of Christmas. Also a mine there. I worked at the mine in the mid 70's.
The mine has not been worked in several years and is owned by Phelps Dodge and they do not allow visits. The site is between Winkelman and Globe on Hwy. 77.

Hey Bunk........Did you by any chance work at the Magma Mine between Superior and Oak Flat? I think they're doing some work there, as they have a guard at the gate just below the headframe. Is that owned by Phelps Dodge? After talking to an old boy that worked Magma and the Queen Mine in Bisbee, I understand it gets a little toasty down there.............FlatironFlatiron,
I never worked at the Magma mine but had friends that did. That mine is now owned by BHP. I heard that they have plans to work the mine in the future at a much deeper level where the temps of the rock could be as high as 150.
If the price of copper stays up I am sure they will work this mine again. I think the depth of this mine is about 4000 feet and is a very hot mine.
I worked at the Ray mine and Christmas mine both open pits, never worked under ground. I almost went to work for Magma at San Manuel before I started for Kennecott at Ray in the early 70's but did not weigh enough to swing a double jack as a chute tapper. Bunk

Hey Bunk,

Any current info you can share on the state of the town of Christmas ? I know they scraped the whole town of Ray to open pit mine, but are there any remains at all left of the town of Christmas ?
