So someone is out there, I just wonder what is really going on, and I'm sure everyone else does too.

Johnnie, and I agree there is to many claim Jumpers, to many kids, that are not being supervised. We guess the parents of some not all, might think that there is nothing wrong with a web-site about ghost towns so they give the "OK" for this fourm. But as we all know there is web- sites that are evil, and unproductive to anyone, and should be monitored and ignored. We are glad that we did not have this to contend with all this weired junk 30 years ago. when our kids were young. We know it is not easy, to keep up with the kids in todays world. there is a lot of parents that mean well but seem to be busy trying to survive in this modern day of laptop commputers, and cell phones, and trying to keep up with their kids. But todays kids are very smart in some ways but not very "street wise" and this is what gets them into trouble by that time its to late. Anyway it can be done its just harder today. We would love to see the simple life of years ago to return. We know that won't happen just wishfull thinking.

Hello again all,

I got a PM back from ghosttowns.com and he said that their last moderator is not around any more, and asked me if I was volenteering. Even know my spelling sucks, I asked if they would send me some more info. and that I would like to clean this stuff up within reason. So well see about that. I don't have all that much time and I don't know half of the stuff about ghosttowns as many of the people here, but I would be willing to help clean the junk out with the coulpe hours I spend online a day.

Sheila & Johnnie I could not agree with you more. My son is 1 and 1/2 years. I see that with the way things are going in the world it will be a challenge to provide a good enviornment for proper growth for him. But I will do my best to not let him become part of another nintendo generation.

Okay, maybe the 3rd time is the charm.....

I would be up for it too, seems the more the merrier. Plus we could do some site clean up, like moving the Gravity Hill topics that come up every month

Really though, I think they just come her because of Brian10X's magnetic personality :p

I hate being critical to someone who has given us so much, but sometimes you have to. I know Todd is a busy person, but more needs to be done on this forum in regards to its content and moderation. The two moderators both flaked on the job and are no longer moderating. In order to run a successful forum, you HAVE to rule with an Iron Fist! My suggestions:

1. Delete ALL spammers accounts! By allowing them to stay, the message that spamming is okay is being given all while providing the spammers with hits and income! Just to note how bad the spam problem here is, 12 of the 30 members on the first page of the members list are spammers!

2. Disallow and DELETE all threads dealing with 'gravity hill' and other supernatural stuff! This site has NOTHING to do with that topic, and by allowing it to continue, the forum is going downhill fast! If folks want to chat about the supernatural and 'gravity hill', there are hundreds if not thousands of other websites to do that on! Again, this site has NOTHING to do with ghost and the supernatural, so why allow it? **** the supernatural folks were given their own forum and they still cannot keep their topics in it!

3. Appoint new moderators who will rule with Iron Fist and keep order and not flake! They need to be able to spot and kill spam and not related threads ASAP in order to keep order.

That is my $0.02 on the topic...

Dezdan...........I couldn't agree with you more. I think the Gravity Hill clowns irritate me more than the spammers, but neither should be allowed to contaminate a website like they do. I enjoy the conversations with most of the ghost town hunters/explorers/adventurers/ old west historians, etc. on this site and get really POed with the lack of moderation. As you said, there are many other sites that deal with the supernatural and paranormal, and don't understand why these people come to this website, other than the name, GHOSTTOWNS.com...I too, don't have the time it takes to moderate, but will support whoever decides to take the task on. ..........

I'm in total agreement with everyone that has posted on this thread. Herbal supplements/Russian nesting dolls/Paranormal activities may be great things, but deserve their own sites: Not this one.

2nd of all, I greatly appreciate the information that the regular posters provide. I'm amazed at the amount of research that you all put into your posts. A lot of times, I read Johnnies posts about places that I've been to, and think "Wow, I didn't know anything about that historical gem!"

3rd, you've probably noticed that I don't post often. A lot of that has to do with me not wanting to put info into the hands of people that might ruin a historical site, hurt themselves, or (shudder) make it popular. I'm a 3rd generation ghost towner with close to 40 years experience on the subject, and I think I've gained another 40 from reading you guys well researched/well informed posts.

Thanks,

I just got another PM from ghosttowns, I tried to reply but the mail box is full. I was going to suggest to him or them to make some of the regulars here moderators. I think the ones who use this site the most will be able to do some good here. From what I gather, most of the salty dogs try to keep it on the subject. And who better to regulate than the regulaters, ya know. Plus with one or two deticated moderators, things happen, life happens, people go places and do things, your not going to keep them forever. With a few around it won't be so bad if one or two skip town. The only problem I forsee with that is moderators deleting too much. Like Dezdan wants to get rid of all of the paranormal guys, where as I think some are ok as long as they are in the other section and they are with in reason. The gates of Mell would of been lost forever if those little ******** were entirely gone. So all and all I think we should all lend a hand in doing this if GT.com will let it happen. :)

I nominate Dezdan!!

Seriously folks. I rarely visit this forum anymore, for my own time reasons, and would love if a few of you regulars took over the reins.

I'll be asking Todd to remove me as a moderator and suggest to him that he look to some of your regulars.

Also, a set of rules that is enforced would be good, but not many read the rules, so you will be deleting many potentially positive contributors.

So, after 2+ years of trying, it's time for me to step aside and let the more regular visitors to the forum take over.

The regulars on here are a great bunch of people, so I have no doubt things will be better off in the long run.

Hence what I was saying about deleting too much...............

GaryB
05-21-2006, 05:55 PM
Well you wouldn't have to delete much. Do a search and you have numerous threads on the same stuff (paranormal boogey man stuff I mean) I'd give them the "other" thread all they want. If they can't realize that's were they should be posting, especially if you tell them, then their loss IMO. But you'd mostly be moving threads around to the right topic is all.

Most sites have a sticky topic at the top for FAQ/Posting rules. Most folks follow them. The ones that don't are asked nicely too and most will once you open their eyes for them. If they decide not too, then suspend, ban, send Bad Bob over to cup check them, whatever ;)

I usually am or could be here off and on everyday myself while checking emails and doing website work. If at least a few of us can do that, then I think we'd be set.

coolguy0621
05-21-2006, 06:49 PM
I am online about 2-3 hours 5-6 days a week at work. With little actual work to do.

And your right GaryB, I think who ever they decide to use for this (if anyone) should all have I little talk about things like that. Because there is a fine line between mis-placed posts and really off topic stuff that needs to be removed.

Last time I looked, 'Gravity Hill' had absolutely nothing to do with Ghost Towns!

I didn't flake, either, I hung on as long as I could, but didn't feel like I had a big support system, and it was too much to handle by myself. I officially sent in my resignation as moderator months ago, once I realized that. I figured that it would be announced by ghosttowns.com, and a cry for new moderator to take my place would be made, but looks like that never happened.

I also feel some real ground rules need to be set on paranormal topics so whoever does moderate will have a clearer picture on how to handle things.

Majority rules of course, but I still think the site can be moderated successfully without an iron fist.
OK, I admit I like to rib the "spooky seekers a bit, 'cos I feel they need some levity, so they don't freak out, and have a heart attack, whilst whisperin' to each other "what's that over there?"
On the "other" hand, the "other" category can be eliminated since there would no longer be a need fer it.

Very well put Dezdan, and thanks Goat, for the comment on our stories, Makes feel we good to hear from all you fellow ghosttowners.

Sheila & Johnnie

We all agree that we need a moderator, But who is up to the task. We all know there is more that meets the eye. Sheila and I would love too and were ask 2 years ago to pitch in but had to decline then, and our health problems have doubled since then. My wife has had to trips to emg. just in the last 12 months. It seems everytime we plan a trip or something We have to cancel our plans, and is just imposible to get away for even a day because of doctors appointments, and other health problem along with other family members health problems.

Sheila very seldon gets on the computer any more and I can't seem to stay on the (www) as long as i did in the past , Thats why i have not posted any of my treasures stories lately. Most of the time when junk is posted I e-mail ghosttowns on the (comments section) and hope for the best or we refer the "Gravity Hill" posters about other web-sites that would be more interesting to their needs, and do everything to suggest for them to follow my leed, but some keep coming back and bring more of their friends back to this web-site because the word "ghost" is part of the web-site so maybe it should be changed to old "Mining Towns Of The West." We are not very commputer savy, so maybe that is to much to ask. It is just a suggestion.

We just can't comimit to that job as a full time moderator. We can't even keep up with our own everyday problems but would agree to do (somthing) to help on (when I can basic)

I remember an old saying that my mother, who was born in 1898 and grew up in an old mining town always told me to be on the watch for through life, and is so true right up to nowdays. Some people "You Give Them A "Inch And They Take A Mile" If we let people onto the site with what we think is in good faith, and they see a opportunity to run away with napsack full weired junk and with no one to say no, that is not permited before long we are overun with the same kind.

We suggest to make strict rules. But if they don't follow the rules their post will be deleted at once.

We know we got carried away, but just had to do some venting.

Johnnie & Sheila

No problem, Dezdan. I did not take offense to your post. When the "Ghost" posts began to show up a year or so ago, Todd figured it would good to set up a "catch-all" forum (the "Other" forum) to move those types of posts into. I'm sure he did not anticipate the number or types of posts at that time. I don't think any of us could have foreseen them.

With a forum as busy as this, there is not an easy fix to the issues at hand, but it is possible with dedication and lots of help.

Well I still think the "other" section is a fine place to put post subjects that are not about the given fields. BUT after hearing what everyone here has posted here, I have to agree that IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH GHOSTTOWNS, execpt the fact that "ghost" is in there, which will attract the Half Lifers forever. And with the support it sounds like we have here on this post alone, dealing with that will be easy. Of course I'm not the expert. So it might sound easy to me, when in fact its some real work. People have illstrated that already here on this post too.

I think the step from here would be to hear from the man him self, to see if we are just pushing keys for the fun of it, or if something is going to happen here.
