Hi Ed, welcome!
I've never been to a Tahawus ghost town, but being Bronx born and having grown up in upstate NY (Poughkeepsie) I traveled to the Adirondacks on many occasions, such beautiful country up there! I know years ago there were some pretty nifty iron mine ruins in the in the Adirondacks. I still have a piece of blue slag I picked up at one such mine, I remember the actual mine wasn't visible, it had been flooded and was now a lake for canoeing, very scenic peaceful place. I was just a kid and can't remember the name of the town but it wasn't too far from Tahawus if I remember correctly.
Here's a link you might find interesting.

I have not lived there but visit there often. We have a place in Newcomb and I ride my bike to the mine and do a fair amount of hiking and skiing from the Upper Works. The land was just sold.

I recently stumbled across an article in my local paper about ghost towns. It featured this site. So I checked it out.

I live in New York State and this one caught my eye - Tahawus: www.ghosttowns.com/states/ny/tahawusoradirondak.html (http://www.ghosttowns.com/states/ny/tahawusoradirondak.html)

I may be headed up through the Adirondack Park in July and thought I may make a stop here. When I started doing some various searches online I came across a number of articles/sites that led me to believe that many of the buildings were dismantled like the ones below:

www.oboylephoto.com/mine/index.htm (http://www.oboylephoto.com/mine/index.htm)

"The operation closed in 1982, and the buildings were demolished in 2005-2006."

www.acppubs.com/article/CA6370322.html (http://www.acppubs.com/article/CA6370322.html)

So is there much to see anymore? My trip through the park will have to be modified quite a bit to include this destination. Is it worth the trip? Thank you.

Edit: I should note that I used the search engine in this forum and didn't turn anything up in regards to this. And I also wonder if this should have been posted in the Current Status of Ghost Towns and Historical Sites forum.

I have been there, and its great!

You can go around the barriers and go right into the mine area, but beware! While we were exploring it, a bunch of guys on motorcycles came into the area from the other end. It appeared that they went into a building and left a minute or so later. But we were hightailing it out of there, so I can't be sure about that. At any rate, there is a lot to see in the area of the old mine.

At the other end, their are old abandoned houses. That6 area itself is not abandoned, though, because it is right near to a very popular trailhead.

Everything in both the mine and town areas looks exactly like the pictures on www.ghosttowns.com (http://www.ghosttowns.com)

I clicked on the oboylesphotos link up above and the person who has that site said that all the buildings at the Tahawus mine have been demolished.
