I do, but you know Vegas. Money talks, and someone pays them enough and no one listens anymore.
"Drought? Water shortage? Okay, we'll only build 100,000 more houses then we'll stop. What's that, we can steal water from other places in the state? Right on! Build another 15 golf courses too!"

Seriously though, to get back on topic (sorry, we have a tendency to do that around here) there aren't any official GT clubs I know of around here. Some hiking clubs, though they mostly hit Red Rock and other local scenic places. If you have a 4X4, I'm in a club that hits historical stuff (GT's, mines, etc) as much as possible. We tend to do the easy stuff, so a stock 4X would suffice. Some of us will go do harder stuff now and then too if you have the right equipment, though usually nothing harder than a 3.5 trail rating.

Where about south of Vegas are you planning to move to?

Across the board, most of the "native" Nevadans or long time ones are very friendly. But Las Vegas and Henderson (which is more like a suburb now than a separate town) are filling up with jerks from every where. Unfortunately, it's a high transient town, with the main goal (it seems anymore) for the majority is to make as much money as fast as possible regardless of who and how you screw them. And as our Water Authority has shown, they're not above screwing other Nevadans to do this.
Now not all of the folks that move here are bad, I have many friends who are not from here and meet many that are good people. But it seems the rate is 5 bad for every 1 good. And by bad I mean people who are ******* in general, whether it be con artists, exceptionally ignorant drivers, folks on the run, you name it. Toss in a big handful of illegals and stir it up and you get Vegas.
Then again we are in desperate need of water, yet we do not stop building houses or golf courses. Home foreclosures are spreading like wild fire along with car seizures. The average life span for a small business is less than 2 years IIRC from last reports. Houses are being built along the boundary edge of state parks. Half of Nevada is suing Las Vegas because we're trying to steal their water. Our teachers do not make enough money to buy a median priced home. Most of our schools skirt with borderline minimum expectations as our school system is one of the largest, yet most highly under funded. There is a massive shortage of teachers due to the low pay, and they have resorted to bringing people from other countries to try to teach. We allow bars and casinos with enough $$ to line the commissioners pockets to built anywhere they please.
Every day another elected official gets caught doing something wrong. Half that get the boot go to work for the new mafia, the homebuilders. Judges have been caught soliciting prostitutes.
Sorry if I'm painting a bad picture, but being a born and raised resident who saw this place as a decent town (as far as a sin capital could be decent) slide further into the cesspool, I have become increasing ashamed of this place. Maybe it's just the troubles of becoming a big city. Either way, I've had my fill and tend to not sugar coat "How Great Las Vegas Is" like the PR people and realtors do.

On a side note, if you can afford it, Boulder City (South of Vegas and Henderson) is quite a great place. They have gone to great lengths to keep their small town feel and appearance. The only real down sides are it's a 30 mile drive one way to Las Vegas and because of the tight building restrictions, realty is on the high side.
If I wasn't looking to move North, I myself would look at property there and buy a Hybrid.

Wow, that sounds like an exact mirror of Phoenix. I knew the cities had similar characteristics, but that all hits Phx right on the head. I am also a transplant here, so I can't say much, but I'm doing my darnest to get outta here. I moved here for work and now I'd rather be making less and have some piece of mind. House is going for sale this month. Crime, traffic, rat race in general, yuppies, illegals, etc :(. Maybe I'll move back when Phx is a ghosttown . Boulder City is our Prescott, were I'm relocating to, but is 80 miles away.

Yeah I'm relocating too. Only problem is NV is like AZ, the money is in only a couple cities. My wife is a teacher so she has more options, but I'm the one trying to find a job where there aren't many. Luckily I just got hired on by the DOT, so the first opening in BFE Nevada I'm likely taking it as they have offices all over Nevada, many from where my family is originally from too.
Lots of folks move here looking for a new life and find out it's hard here. But the #'s leaving isn't as many as the #"s coming in unfortunately. If you have any problems gambling you cannot live here or if you develop them, you have to leave or you'll be introuble very quick. Gambling is everywhere and you can't hide from it. I hear of folks gambling their whole paychecks in a night, as well as retirees living check to check in the local casino. Plus, there's really very few things for kids (mostly teenagers) to do, so you get lots of problems there. IIRC we're top 3 for drop outs of HS girls who are pregnant. Don't see that statistic plastered on the Vegas ads

Holly smoke....it's Melbourne!
We've just had 2 of the most voluminous floods in history, but they refuse outright to even consider a new dam and they are stealing water from the "bread basket" of NSW/Victoria. They even have the gall to propose a new pipe-line for the express purpose, but..... no new dam!
The just-gone Premier of this State, Steve Bracks, announced plans to increase Melbournes population by 1,000,000 by 2012.
Insanity, pure insanity.
It's no comfort learning the same crap goes on everywhere.
Money doesn't talk....it screams.
I gotta get out of here before they do my head right in!
Gary - is the teacher shortage still critical?
Yep Gravel, the teacher shortage is still critical. My wife teaches 1st grade here, and a lot of the new teachers to the district are from out of state. They often leave after the first year because the starting pay is low, and housing isn't. Add to that the transient nature of the lower income area(where my wife teaches) and it makes it difficult for a new teacher from a more sedate part of the country to survive.
And don't get me started on the "No Child Left Behind" BS.......

Henderson (AKA Hooterville) is really three places. Old Henderson (Where I was born at the BMI Hospital) has lots of friendly folks. Green Valley, the second part of Henderson, has a lot of people a bit taken with themselves. The third part if this ever growing expanse (up the side of Black Mountain, toward Dutchman Pass, toward the River Mountains) is new, new homes with lots of people trying to figure out how to pay their mortgages. I don't know if unfriendly is a good term but preoccupied might be. I thought Ney York City was unfriendly but the closeness shared by people on your block is not what you will find here. The concept of a block party is lost, at least in this part of the west.
There is a lot to do and lots of places to get away from the teaming humanity. Gary's 4wd exploring group seems like a lot of fun! Do let us know when you get to the Valley.

Goat -
Thanks for the info on the teacher situation. This is encouraging. As I'm quite prepared to live in a trailer, "starting pay" scales in order to pay a mortgage aren't a concern
A 4x4 is!

He forgot to add they're hiring people that aren't teachers, but are willing to learn to become one. I wonder if I can do that as a brain surgeon?
Oh, and hiring people from other countries. I kan't speeko a no engrish buts I can teech its.
No Child Left Behind- if a kid who has a learning disability is tested, shows progress through out the year, yet isn't at grade level by the year end; they're a failure. Great, kick them while they're down. And punish the teachers for not doing their job good enough to the politicians standards plus having to deal with the lazy parents, er.. I mean guardians.
But yeah, teachers are in a high demand. Pretty much every where I hear. I commend them though, I don't want their job. I'd be in jail by day two for back handing some ignorant little punk or their parents.

sounds like growing pains... I saw the same thing happen over the last 20 years in my home town - San Jose (California). Now its so far out of control that we all just live with it, I guess you can say that we were slapped in to submission. So when we see an average middle class neighborhood with home prices in the 800K to 900K its normal!
Illegals run freely here... its so bad that some freaken humane advocates actually tried to sue Home Depot for not providing shelter and bathroom facilities for the illegals that hang out looking for work....STUPID!
Maybe I should hold up a couple of banks and move to Ely where I can live and die in peace!.... I guess I would miss 7-11 though...:(

I couldn't agree more, my wife is a teacher and we moved from Pacifica Ca, to Sparks NV. The school district which hired her promised her a decent salary and good benefits, but once we made the move up there and settled in, we found out they changed the pay scale and lowered the benefits . Her pay was horrible, and benefits almost non-existent. Needless to say, we were stuck in a rut for a year. We loved the area, but ended up moving back to Mexifornia where they pay teachers a decent wage with benefits. Believe it or not, they pay teachers in Vegas a lot more than they pay teachers in the Reno area. :o
I agree, the No Child Left Behind is a crock. I do not understand why anyone would want to be a teacher, but my wife seems to enjoy it.
I have been to San Jose a lot, and it has changed drastically. We used to head up to Joseph D. Grant park all the time, but the amount of illegally dumped trash on the side of the road was becoming unbearable. There is really no where to run to anymore. Sparks was also a "changing" community according to everyone I talked to who had been there for a whilem, but coming from Mexifornia, it was like I was finally back in the US! Now I am back on the front lines.

That is just plan nasty. I assume there's no recourse to a tribunal of any type?

I should point out, I'm an adult ESL teacher. The students I usually encounter walk in the door with their own motivation.I don't take on the little darlins that Mom and Dad dont discipline!
I couldn't handle public school teaching. I know I'd be up on a charge in.... a New York Minute!

Ya, it was a major disappointment to say the least, and if we could of afforded a lawyer, we may have taken legal action. The good news is we are better off this year, so perhaps its time to take another look at that option.
