I was wondering if GT is going to have any more rallys. I read about a couple and it would be great to have another. Of course I would like it in NV, Northern Cal, Utah, maybe Arizonia:confused:

The Rallies still happen, though I don't think GT.com has anything to do with them.

You have to get a hold of someone on the Ghost Town Webring and see if they can tell/invite you. I asked Cat from http://www.ripleysghosttowns.com/index.html to keep me in the loop, but I haven't heard anything back yet other than it might take place in Idaho again.

I heard a mention of one (a rally, though maybe not the same folks) in April in a post here awhile back, but that's about it. If that's the case, I might not be able to go now as I set aside a week of vacation to do my own exploring in early May.

Hawaii sucks.

I was born there. Spent 29 restrictive years there.

Most places fun to explore are off limits, protected land, or "kapu".

I lived on Oahu, and granted, there are fewer places of interest there.

Our house was only a couple of miles from
http://www.hawaiistateparks.org/parks/oahu/keaiwa.cfm

and I used to explore there all the time. Nuthin' to see.

Visit Hawaii to surf and meet interesting people. Forget ghost towns. The Hawaiians lived in thatched huts (like, of course, my own family did) and they fare far worse over the years than adobe.

If it isn't in a guided tour then it isn't there.

And don't get me started on walking to school barefoot around hot lava flows.

I was joking about Hwaii. From what I have heared is Maui is so tourist trappish anymore that it is ruined. Back in early 70's I can tell you it was beautiful then. I was alot younger then too. What I was thinking was Elko or White Pine Counties in Nevada

I figured you were joking, but (and I'm the only one you will ever hear this from) I have a sore spot about Hawaii.

It boiled down to a lack of freedom. Back in the socialist republic of Hawaii, I wasn't allowed to take my 4x4 anywhere interesting, I couldn't own any of the guns I wanted, and all my darn hotrods had to pass a opressive "safety inspection" every year.

And having to listen to "pidgin english" all day was worse than hearing Spanish now.

Arrgh.

My offroad club does a 3 day stint in Ely every last weekend in July exploring old mines, ghost towns and the scenery. All of our runs are set for stock friendly 4X4's with one or two tossed in for the more adventurous. Anyone can tag along, as it's not an official event. I can post the link if interested.

I'm also leading a run to Deer Lodge (Hackett's Ranch) and Fay in Lincoln County, NV late September for Lincoln County Trails Day. I'll post that up once I get more info to pass along.
