View Full Version : Mojave Rd water crossing

I heard the water crossing in Afton Canyon was deeper than usual. When I was in the area I checked it out on Nov 16-17.

I measured a depth of 25 and the surface elevation (shore line) seemed to be lower than normal.

The deepest water crossing is the first one East of Afton canyon campground.

IMHO the cause of the deep water is vehicles driving fast, and wearing away the road bed. 2 feet deep water is not a real issue even for a stock truck based 4x4 if properly drive through water. BUT a stock car based 4x4 could have trouble with water this deep. Also if the Mojave river is running at normal spring flows the water will be deeper than 2 ft.

This is just an FYI and will hopefully help desert travelers stay safe and save $$ on vehicle costs.

it looked deep back in early october. we were on bikes and crossed on the RR tracks like everyone else was.

on our way back to the campground there was a group of 15 or so 4x4s watching each other cross it with tow straps ready just in case.

if i did it again i would probably just start around rasor to avoid that.
