: Thee cannot legally utilize thy metal detector on any historically protected area such as state historic parks, etc. However, thee can obtain (and I strongly suggest) "written" permission from a property owner to detect merrily, should the property owner be feeling benevelent enough to allow such. There are, indeed, stiff penalties levied for

: those caught on (or in) historic areas. Unless things have changed recently, this is the latest info I'm aware of.

: Coulterville itself is all private property. However, there is a lot of government land south, east and north of the town, both BLM and National Forest land. These areas are open and there are a lot of relics to be found in and around the abandoned mines in the area. Especially east and south of the town all the way to the Merced river canyon at Briceburg. Get a good map.

: Vern,

: Thanks for the info. I will be sure to get a good map and talk with locals. I wasn't aware of BLM land in the area--always stuck in my mind as "desert" areas for BLM. Thanks.
