From what I understand is that around that same time frame is when the roads up to the Eagle&Bluebell, Chiefcon (I think this is the one that chief owns), and several others were fenced off and only accessible by pemission only. You are right though in the fact that the homes are right up to the base of the canyon where the Eagle&Bluebell are located. I thought that both of these mines were shafts did you guys rapell into them? I just I could have made it down to this area before the state went in and reclaimed all of the mines, because it appears that there were several very large mines down there. How many mines in the area were you able to explore before you moved?
I saw the head frame and buildings were still up there last time. The E&B has a main double compartment vertical shaft that is either 1850 or 2250 feet deep, I can't remember now. The mines on the east side of town are hot and wet at depth. There is also a tunnel driven east into the mountain a few thousand feet deep that ends at another well developed vertical shaft which connects with the outside workings. I found two antique bottles deep in this tunnel under a wooden barrel. Both these shafts had laddered manways at the time I was growing up in the area, though the main shaft's ladders are just tacked to the wall of the shaft with no rest stations or back braces except a plank to stand on. I would never go down that shaft again it is too dangerous. A left side trapdoor accesses the ladders. There were at least a dozen ore cars out on the tailings also.

I have explored the surface around every single mine in the area, and several of them underground. I think I've been in every single tunnel out there too.

We're most definitely not going into any of these mines during the rally. God knows they're probably not safe and I really don't feel like risking anyone's lives at the rally. Not to mention most of them are at least fenced off now; alot even have rebar grating or huge metal doors on them. I'm just hoping to get a tour of the property and buildings that belong to the Chief Consolidated. Still have to contact the guy that runs it for his permission.

    Rachel,

The discussion that Brad and I are having is just a tangent. I am talking about the same thing that you are and that is just getting on their property to take surface tours and to see what is left of the Eagle Bluebell, Chiefcon, and etc. By no means was I implying that we take the whole group into abandon mines, so I'm sorry if you misunderstood the tangent that we got off on (not saying of course that I don't like exploring them though if they are safe enough). Please let me know if you would still like the contact info for the caretaker.

I'm sorry if I sounded upset. That wasn't my intention. It's just that other people are also reading this and I don't want them getting the wrong idea about the rally and only coming to see some mines; they'll be sorely disappointed. So sorry!

    Default accessing gated mines

    Hey all..
FYI, it is required that if a mine is gated and there is another entrance that is not gated that there must be way to enter and exit from the gated area. Some of you may know what I am talking about. Feel around on the bars and you may find a way into these mines. Or if you are really determined... find and air shaft and repel in. IMHO this is the safest way as there is not a lot of digging or picking that has gone on in the air shaft and they are pretty solid. As always be careful and if you dont know what you are doing find someone who does to assist you.

BTW: I'll keep checking in for updates on the rally as I would really like to meet a few of you.

Check with the BLM, they can usually tell you the status of the land. If its still privately owned you will need to check with a real estate agent, otherwise you are pretty much out of luck as the BLM rarely parts with any of its land. btw... the majority of Eureka is for sale, the post office, one of the old mercantiles, a bar and a motel.. last I heard the woman who is selling it was looking to get $300k for all of it... really quite a steal if you think about it, but good luck getting financing on such a venture...

Yes the rally is still planned for this weekend, the 25th and 26th. The initial meeting place is the Best Western Cottontree Inn parking lot off exit 265 (just off I-15) in Springville at 8:30 am.

    Default Spring Canyon Pictures

For everyone who attended the 2004 rally.
Here are a couple of pictures of what Standardville & Spring Canyon towns looked like back in the 30's.

Had a goodtime at this years rally. The Chief Mine #1 tour in Eureka was well worth it. Thanks Rachel for setting that up.

Looking forward to next years rally.

    Thanks,
