Smile How Did Singapore get its name?

Hi all, I am from a country in Southeast Asia called Singapore. I was studying in Illinois when I first came across the name of a ghost town in Allegan, Michigan called Singapore. Just wondering if anyone can tell me how did this town get it's name and its history, thanks!

Ah, beautiful Singapore . . . Your's that is. Been there many times.

As for Singapore, MI . . . According to the USGS, It was founded in 1837 by Oshea Wilder & sons and abandoned by 1875. Here are a couple of links.

Rockcrusher, Started to post a rather inane reply to this thread. I've learned. There may be someone with info, and they are likely smarter than me. I appreciate the sites. OJ

There is a book all about Singapore, Michigan -- written by loca historian Kit Lane. I have read through it and can't find where the name came from -- but I sent an email to Kit to ask her.
