Arrow Goldfield - Bodie September Death Valley later

Wondering if any ghost towners in the Sacramento region would like a trip to Bodie and Goldfield soon, or to Death Valley in October. Death Valley might be better since there are more new places to explore there. Any other ideas?

Nice link Tyroler. It surely is a spectacular looking area.

Mah fellow merkins - is Hawthorn a civilian no-go area or only certain parts of it?

Just parts of it. The highway (US95) used to go through town, but then they created a truck route that bypasses it. But almost everyone uses it. I think it might have hurt the town some IMO. It's a shame too, because one of the few interesting things on that god-forsaken trip (Vegas to Reno) is checking out the small towns.

Also, the highway is really close to the ammo dumps, so you can check them out.

That was the idea, mate. From GE perspective, it looks really interesting.

    That drive is tedious, yeah?
Just a b.t.w, is Las Vegas as "chintzy" as it's depicted? It's almost an unreal place in my mind, like a mirage.

Tyroler............You definitely won't need to worry about the heat if you make the trip in Febuary, but may want to think about some cold weather BDU's. It can get pretty nippy around Aurora, Mt. Hicks, and Lucky Boy that time of the year. Thanks for the link to Mineral County. There's some beautiful county in Nevada, as ya know. GaryB can attest to that.

Depends on what you're into I guess. I have done the trip so many times it's boring. I'm sure you can attest to driving 400+ miles and not seeing very much. From Vegas to Tonopah it's down right suicidal IMO. Except for Goldfield and Beatty, it's sage brush and more sage brush. From Tonopah to Reno, you at least get a town every so often to keep you interested. For someone like yourself, never having seen it, it might be a hoot. You do get to see some neat geological stuff, plus you can see how the foliage changes from green high desert to the brown desert of the upper Mojave. And if you take the time to explore each town and see the sights of the highway, there's neat stuff to see. I've always been in a semi-hurry, so I haven't explored too much.

Las Vegas is pretty much a mirage in the desert. It's built on money, so anything that creates issues with creating more money is crushed and done away with. History has very little value here, and it's an act of God to get something saved from destruction. They tear it down, build up new bigger and gaudier sights that attract more money. Planning is done on the here and now and varies upon which housing contractor or casino is paying off which representative(s).

We're in trouble with water, zoning, over crowding in schools and roads, etc. The casino's make billions yet pay very little tax. Illegals are rampant. I can go on and on. Likely it's the same with any big(er) city, but when you have a mayor that's got a contract with a gin maker and spends more time trying to get a pro sports team to town than fixing the real issues, it makes you feel special. And not a good special.

It used to be a decent place to live (born and raised) but it has quickly become an abscess IMO. If you like the night life or entertaining, it's the greatest place in the US for that. But other than that, it's losing it's luster. At least with the natives. We're jumping ship every chance we get, and it's getting harder to find someone that's been here for more than 10 years.

Ehh, maybe I'm just disgruntle. Either way, plans are being set so my wife and I are not here by next winter. That will be a good day

Ya, I know what you mean Gary, and I moved out of California and to Sparks NV for that very reason. I lived in Sparks for about a year, but they don't pay much, so we have moved back to Mexifornia. Sparks is very nice, but the illegal aliens are starting to flood that area too. Its sad to see the country taken over without a single shot being fired!

Vegas has always reminded me California, and you guys have been swamped with illegal aliens. The area I am currently in must have a population of 50% illegal alien! Anyway, I can't wait to get the **** out of here again. Should only have to live here another 8 months! Are you planning on staying in NV?
