Default Ghost Towns near Salton Sea

    http://www.desertusa.com/colorado/he...du_hedged.html

I'm headed to the Salton Sea area and Quartzsite, Arizona in a few weeks and am curious if diverting out of my way to area Ghost Towns is worth the extra gas in my 8 MPG rig.

    Would appreciate any tips.

    Thanks,

91 miles west of the Salton Sea on CA 78 is Julian, with Ocotillo Wells 17 miles on the same road. I've not been to either, but you can google for online pictures. Both were old historic stagecoach stops.

In AZ, The only larger size gt's are Salome and further east, Wickenburg on US 60. South of Wickenburg is Vulture City, but must check at Wick'burg to see if Vulture City is open. North of Wickenburg is Congress, with Crown King, Stanton, Weaver, and Octave to the SE. As my gt books are all outdated, status of last 4 is unknown. Someone may be able to provide update.

Hi! I have always wanted to go to the Salton Sea; Bombay Beach in particular to see all the old homes. I just don't have the time to go, and looks like I won't be able to go before summer.

Post some pics of your trip! I would love to see them.

We went to the Salton Sea in 2004. The stench from the dead fish and dead birds was unbearable. We inquired about it at the visitor's center and were told "it's a natural regular occurrence."
(it couldn't have anything to do with pollution...nahhh...not in California)

I read about that, that the place stinks of dead. I also read that it was a real dump. But, there are some real interesting pics I found online that makes this a place I want to see, atleast once.

Oh, goodness! Could you imagine the kind of stuff people would post if there was such a thing as a 'scratch and sniff' board?

Phewww...I'll pass on the scratch and sniff too. I still gag if I think about the day we went there.
When we lived in Palm Springs, we were resident managers of a retirement community. We were constantly getting phone calls from residents because on windy days, the odor from the Salton Sea was carried in the air all the way to Palm Springs. Residents were calling to notify us that they thought someone had died and we'd better go investigate.

Here's a pretty good site about one of my not so favorite places. Salton Sea Description

I can imagine the stuff Brian 10X would post on such a board. But I personally have to claim innocence in thoughts of such revolting possibilities.

    Right Laura?

Gads... I looked at the link LauraA provided... I didn't exactly get a "warm and fuzzy feeling" when I read that sewage from Mexical ran into the Salton Sea... 4-Git the scratch and sniff! Speaking of "warm and fuzzy" I bet if you walked knee deep in that water, you would come out with something warm and fuzzy stuck to your legs!
