I have been asked by the National Forest Service to design new interpretive markers for this famous stage station. The present ones are not correct. Only one of the four graves contains the remains of a Confederate Soldier. The two end graves are those of the three massacred Butterfield employees. Two are in one grave. Also the marker stating that the reason the line was closed was from competition from the Pony Express. This is also not true and will change. The famous Pony Express never existed in Arizona and was never a competition for any stage line. I am also designing a new marker to replace this marker.
Attached is a drawing by Grosvenor who was a passenger on a Butterfield stage in 1860. The drawing shows the graves of the Butterfield employees that were massacred September, 9, 1858.
