    Default The more things change...

...the more they stay the same.

From "On the bloody trail of Geronimo" by Lt John Bigelow Jr, May 1885.

"The people of Arizona & New Mexico are not allowed to settle their Indian troubles themselves, & the National government will not settle it for them."

Nearly a century & a quarter after this was written the situation for the Americans living on the border hasn't changed. Sometimes its a dam war zone.

The states can't secure the southern border & the Federal government refuses to act decisively.

    Living history...

Missles?...they skipped that & went right to the ground invasion.

I'm surprised that Mexico hasn't sent tanks over to protect their citizens from depredations from their own countrymen yet.

If everyone just went back where they came from this problem would go away.

The problem isn't that simple and those of us down here have to deal with it on a daily basis.

My apologies. Just trying to add a little levity.

I grew up on central CA, where the ratio of immigrant workers to residents has historically been among the highest in the state, so I'm familiar with the issues.

But I also know of no resident who will work the same hours for the same pay, so it'll be interesting to see what happens to food costs once the corporate farms start paying a wage closer to the legal minimum.

Will it be enough to offset the other infrastructure costs of immigration? Will it be a net gain, or a net loss?

So far the only stats I've heard on this issue is from people with an agenda one way or another, so each only talks about the upside or the downside but no one I've seen yet has dared to put together a comparison of the two to see the net effect.

I guess the proof will be in the pudding. Interesting times.

Border security has been a complex issue in America for a long time:

No umbrage taken. The "Pickers" have always been here legally. The farmers had that worked out decades ago. The Illegals and drug smugglers are another breed and have made the Borderlands a bit of a madhouse. It's a very complex issue with many ramifications and I haven't seen anyone offer any workable solution.

We could build huge coast to coast walls at a fantastic price, but the coyotes and cartels will just hire engineers to overcome it. They have a great track record so far. The Mexican Universities have produced many first rate and clever engineers.

It's just a bit maddening to live in the midst of a mass human migration and watch the Emperor in Washington fiddle. Shades of the Roman Empire?
