Default ALTO, AZ one more time (question)

This past weekend We drove to Alto after reading about it on this forum. We went in from the Mt. Hopkins Road - to FS-143 (4WD required) and out through Solero Ranch. At Alto we met an elderly gentleman who seemed to know a great deal of history of the area. He told us that the mines near Alto were being worked by the local Indians even before the Spanish came, and the Jesuits took gold and silver from the mines by using Indian labor. This was one reason why the Jesuits were expelled from the missions in the 1760s and all of their assests were confiscated by the Spanish military. I question this, but he refrenced the book by Kessell, John L. Mission of Sorrows: Jesuit Guevavi and the Pimas, 1691-1767 I can't get my hands on the book. Has anyone heard this story before about Alto? I am aware of the modern history of Alto.

By the way, my grandson found an old crusted penny while wandering through the ruins at Alto. We were excited untill we got home and cleaned it up. It was dated 1985.
