They were mining for gold, but not a single mine ever found enough to justify its continuance.
The Tahquitz Mining District in the San Jacinto Mountains' Garner Valley was founded in the late 1800's. There were a number of mines including the Gold Shot, the Hemet Bell, and the Winchester.
This past weekend, a neighbor of mine in Idyllwild suggested we go look for a mine he'd heard about in Garner Valley. I don't know the name of this mine, but when we found a mine (maybe not the one he'd heard about), it proved to be spectacular and unspectacular at the same time.
It was a tunnel through solid granite with three entrances, but couldn't have been more than 100' total. However, it had equipment laying about and provided some excellent photo opportunities.

What I like most about this mine was that they had tracks and an ore car, but not much of a mine to use it on.

My pictures may make this look large--- it wasn't.

I'm amazed by how undisturbed that mind is. It's not often you find a nice, intact place that hasn't been stripped to the bone by vandals.
Easily distracted.

I agree. And the weird thing is, that the mine is fifty feet from a county road in a well traveled area. Why isn't that ore cart in somebody's front yard right now?

Thats a neat old mine. Nice shots NJ, & you had a nice day for it too.
Being that close to "civilization" you'd expect everything to be ripped off, shot to he11, burned & covered with graffiti. Could there be hope yet?
