Default Gold Rush and Comstock Lode trip

I just got back from taking my family on our 4th grade daughter's California history field trip. We went from So' Cal' up to Old Sacramento, over to Coloma, up to Grass Valley, over to Virginia City, over the Carson Pass to Jackson, and then south to Columbia, Sonora, Yosemite, and back home.

The Bayley House in Pilot Hill is still surrounded by a fence, but there's a banner up saying there are plans for restoration.

Apparently I forgot to resize the photos I took of the Empire Mine so they'd fit here, so I'll have to move onto Virginia City.

Here are some from Virginia City.

I started out early in the morning when the streets were deserted. After walking the cemetaries, I took some photos facing west toward the town and Mt. Davidson.

I worked my way down from B Street after the cemetary visit.

Why would I bother to include the Comstock in a California history trip? Because the Bank of California used their interest in Comstock mines to pay for the building of San Francisco.

Here's the former Bank of California branch (now named the Sharon House after the first branch manager, who eventually became senator and one of the most hated people in Nevada).

Also on C Street to the south of the Sharon House were the Fourth Ward School House and Cafe del Rio (Don posted old photos of these buildings in a great thread a while back).

Further down the hill on D Street were the "Chollar Mansion" (former office of the Chollar Mine) and some interesting views of the backs of C Street buildings. I think the back view I have here was in the red light district.

Back on C Street was the Territorial Enterprise building (now the Mark Twain Museum). Oh, the cool vibes that place gave off as we walked the basement and I imagined Mark Twain and Dan de Quille writing and having their work printed there.

Further down on E Street was the old Virginia & Truckee station. The "crookedest road in the world" was the product of the Bank of California's machinations (lots of California history there).

A lot more Comstock silver would have gone through here had it not been for the Bank of California and the V&T.

We stayed two nights in Sonora at the Gunn House. They were the most relaxing and enjoyable nights on the trip.

I also took a shot of the famous City Hotel.
