    Default Walker, Kansas

Walker, Kansas is in Ellis County. It is located just north of Interstate 70 at exit 172. The location is about a mile east of where the old Route 40 crosses under the Interstate. There are several inhabitants, but most of the town is gone. There's no "downtown" any more. But there is a huge and beautiful Catholic Church, St. Anne's, on the only street (Main Street) that goes north-south through the town. A large grain elevator stood by the railroad tracks until 2010, when it was torn down because it was about to fall over.

About half of the few houses that make up Walker are, like the church, well maintained. But the other half are in a picturesque state of ruin. Five of those are pictured below. Nothing is "staged" in these photos. There are exactly as I found them.

In the 1940s, Walker was home to a large Air Force based which closed shortly after World War II ended. The remnants of the facility, mainly an airstrip, remain to the north-northwest of the town itself. It's off-limits to photographers.

All photos taken 22 February 2012.

Yeah, nice to the mid west represented. Seems like most ghost towns were mining towns that crapped out but farmers hit hard times too.

    Thanks.

Hi, I'm brand new in here. Searching for Orum Nebraska. Would like to know if anyone is left from our family. My greatgrandmother was born in Omaha Nebraska in 1890. A town was called Orum after our family. Would love to know about the town - just read about ghost towns and feel sad about it. Don't know if anyone in here can help me get further with this.
