    Default Hornitos California

Can anyone tell me if Hornitos California has (or had) a living history museum? I won a set of 35mm slides off of eBay that were owned by a teacher, and I'm trying to catalog every slide. The same set also has images from Mariposa (as best as I can tell from the hand writing.) There are a few Victorian Dressed people in those slides. Was there ever a gold dredge in Hornitos, or where they hard rock mines out there?

St. Catherine Church, notice that it's missing the belltower. Does that help narrow the date down for anyone?

Same Church as above, but it's now got a belltower. It may not be visible in the first picture, or is this a newer picture?

On the sign out in front, it says Hornitos, Calif., directly underneath the horizontal fence rail.

Also, on the CA page, (see Hornitos) Delores Steele had submitted a photo of the church with bell tower, but the photo has no date on it.

Here's a photo of the church taken about 1965. http://www.donwinslow.net/images/Gho...6-63%20258.jpg

Sorry, the labels got mixed up. Is the graveyard in Hornitos?

Don, thank you for the church photo, that looks very nice!

The only museum that I've known of in Hornitos was a history museum in the jail. It was run by Francisco (Frank) Salazar who was born in Hornitos in 1895. I never saw the museum myself, I first visited Hornitos in the mid-1970s, by then Frank had passed away. I don't think there was any gold dredging in Hornitos. There were hard rock mines in the area.

Hornitos is in Mariposa County. They have an excellent history museum run by the county historical society. Their website is: http://mariposamuseum.com
