According to sources the Edna Pearce Lockett Homestead on the site of Fort Basinger, Florida is in danger of a surplus auction. Apparently the property has bounced around from Highlands County to SWFMD, to U.S. Fish and Wildlife, and then back to SWFMD. Who then tried to give it back to the county along with $500.000 but has received no takers.

Although many organizations have expressed interest and desire for this remote location, there have been no takers. That means money, of course.

The site includes the Lockett Homestead, barn & outbuildings, family burial plot, and a schoolhouse. Hopefully someone will come to their senses soon.
