There are privately owned ghost towns with historical societies and "Friends of" type organizations, as well, where people volunteer their time to help out.

: It's also a fine line between what is trash & treasure in a ghost town - technically anything you find over 50 years old is protected - you need to be sure what you are cleaning up should be cleaned up.

I too am looking for Ghost Town volunteer programs. More specifically programs aimed at RVers, where volunteers are provided a camping space and hookups for an extended period of service. So far I have found two -- Custer City, ID and Panhandle Pioneer Settlement, Blountstown, FL. Panhandle Pioneer Settlement is actually a recreated settlement rather than a ghost town.

We were provided a full hook-up site while we were the caretakers of a ghost town in New Mexico. I heard a rumor the other day that government backed volunteer positions might go away because of budget cuts. The presence of a caretaker helps to deter vandalism, and it would be very disappointing if that presence were to go away and leave the town vulnerable. Not everyone respects these old vestiges of days gone by.
Afew years back, we were going to go to Rhyolite in Nevada, but then decided not to. At the time, the area where the caretakers camped was located in the town of Beatty a few miles from Ryolite.

    Good luck!
    Kathy
