Lost Dutchman Mine

The story of the lost dutchman mine has always been a favorite of mine.

There certainly was a dutchman who was actually from Germany and he certainly had a supply of gold, but did he actually have a mine in the Superstitions or just hidden gold? And was it actually in those mountains? This question has been raised even though he was suppose to have given a map to a friend just before he died which indicated the spot as being in the Superstitions.

Hello! Ghostdancer, The Lost Dutchman Mine is one of our favorite treasure story also, But what is the latest on The lost Dutchman Mine? We watch several documentry's on The Lost Dutchman Mine, some programs show that it was found many years ago, but some documentry's show that the mine is still out there to be redicovered.

Don't think there's anything new as far as info goes. It is a shame the urban encroachment to the area though. I've hiked into the Superstitions on three occasions some years back.

I don't believe that anything "found" there is the mine.

The Killer Mountains by Curt Gentry is probably the best book ever written on the subject.

I recall reading an article recently about some exploration into the area looking for the mine. Part of the problem the people were having is they thought they found it but because it was on government land that were forced to use the same methods to extract the gold and excavate the mine as was used 200 years ago. No machinery, trucks, winches etc. I will see if I can find it. I believe it was in true west magazine. I would think some of our AZ members would have seen it in the papers.

The article appeared in the April 2005 issue of True West magazine. It was written by Bob Willis. I am sitting here reading it. Two pages long.



The group called “Heat” started excavating of a old mine shaft they found in September of 2004. No treasures as of the date of the article. Although the article was probably written 3 to 6 months before it was actually publish.

Hope that helps. I would think if they actually found anything it would have been in the papers by now.
